Tesla Certified Installers Serving New Brunswick Homeowners
Princeton Electrical Makeover has provided residential electrical services throughout Middlesex County since 2008. We’re a Tesla Certified Installer for the Wall Connector and Powerwall, meaning our team is trained to install, inspect, and service Tesla products for code compliance and warranty validity. Every installation is performed by licensed, insured, and certified electricians.
Residential EV charger installation in New Jersey requires a dedicated 240V circuit on its own breaker, a permit pulled from the local authority, and a licensed electrician. We handle the permit, the wiring, and the inspection coordination so New Brunswick homeowners don’t have to. Free estimates are available virtually or in person, and pricing is transparent with no hidden fees.

How Does an Electric Car Charging Station Work?
In the United States, standard EV chargers use an SAE J1772 plug, commonly called a “J plug,” compatible with all makes and models of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Teslas are the only exception; adapters are included with each Tesla sold in the US and are also available from dealerships, auto parts suppliers, and online retailers.
The two residential charging levels work very differently in practice. Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. It’s workable for light daily driving but impractical for most households. Level 2 charging runs on a dedicated 240V circuit and delivers 20 to 36 miles of range per hour depending on the charger’s amperage, making it the standard choice for home installation.
It’s worth noting that the wall-mounted unit is technically EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). The EV’s onboard charger controls how much power is accepted; the EVSE manages safe power delivery. Level 2 units are available in hardwired and plug-in versions, though plug-in models are code-limited to 40 amps maximum output.
Why New Brunswick Homeowners Choose Princeton Electrical Makeover
Our Tesla Certified Installer credential covers Wall Connector and Powerwall installations, but we also install a wide range of charger brands including ChargePoint, Enel X/JuiceBox, Grizzl-e, Sema Connect, and Wallbox. That breadth matters when navigating NJ incentive programs, where the charger brand can affect which rebates may stack together. We currently recommend Enel X/JuiceBox for homeowners who want to pursue the NJ ChargeUp rebate and a Time of Use discount through PSE&G.
Before any installation, we assess your panel’s capacity to confirm whether the existing service can support the new dedicated circuit. If it can’t, we can install a sub-panel or, where needed, coordinate a full panel upgrade before the EV circuit goes in. This step helps avoid permit delays and supports rebate eligibility, since NJ requires charger equipment to be UL and Energy Star certified to qualify.
Our installations are backed by strong warranties. Our electricians use protective footwear and floor mats on every job, and cleanup is included. We’ve earned the Angie’s List award in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and financing options are available for homeowners who need flexibility.
Will My Existing Electric Panel Accommodate a Circuit for an EV Charger?
An EV charger requires a dedicated circuit and can’t share a breaker with other loads. Our free estimate, available virtually or in person, determines whether your current panel has the capacity to support EV charging. If it doesn’t, a sub-panel can be installed to support the dedicated circuit. Some older homes may require a full panel upgrade or service upgrade before installation can proceed. When the utility determines the home’s service is inadequate, the utility manages that upgrade, and most utilities offer contributions toward utility-side make-ready costs.
Can I Leave My Vehicle Unattended While It Is Being Charged?
It depends on the charging station you choose. Modern Level 2 home charging stations automatically stop power transfer once the vehicle reaches full charge, making overnight and unattended charging safe and straightforward. For residential use, we recommend a station with this automatic shutoff feature as a matter of course. Your car can stay plugged in until you’re ready to drive without any need to monitor it.
Can I Install a Residential Electric Car Charging Station Myself?
Not in New Jersey. State law requires a licensed electrician to install EV charging equipment on a dedicated circuit, and a permit must be pulled and pass inspection before rebates can be applied. DIY installation without a permit can void eligibility for PSE&G make-ready rebates and the NJ ChargeUp $250 incentive. Because adding an EV charger increases the electrical demand on your home, the circuit must be properly sized and installed with the appropriate safety measures. This work goes well beyond standard outlet installation. Our electricians are licensed and insured.
NJ EV Charger Incentives for New Brunswick Homeowners
Several financial incentives are available to New Brunswick homeowners who install a qualifying Level 2 home charging station. We advise homeowners on which charger brands qualify for each program and handle the electrical permit required to qualify for NJ rebates. All incentive programs are subject to change; verify current details with the relevant program administrator before purchasing equipment.
Available incentives include:
PSE&G residential make-ready rebate: Up to $1,500 toward customer-side installation costs for PSE&G customers.
JCP&L residential make-ready rebate: JCP&L has historically offered up to $1,500 for Level 2 customer-side installations, but this program was closed as of June 30, 2025. Contact JCP&L directly to confirm whether any current incentive is available.
NJ ChargeUp rebate: $250 rebate for the purchase and installation of an eligible EV charger unit. Equipment must be UL and Energy Star certified.
Federal tax credit: 30% of installation cost, up to $1,000, for installations in eligible locations. Eligibility depends on your location and individual tax situation; consult a tax advisor before relying on this credit.
Time of Use discount: Approximately $0.02/kWh reduction available through PSE&G for qualifying smart charger units, including Enel X/JuiceBox models.
One important program rule: under the NJ DEP It Pays to Plug In program, equipment must not be purchased before a grant is executed, and completed projects are not eligible. Our free estimate includes a rebate eligibility review so you can understand which programs may apply before any equipment is ordered.
